Abstract

Indonesia  Selective Cutting System (TPI, nowTPTI) is the most widely applied  management regime in harvesting Indonesian tropical forests. It is observed that selective   cutting has created space and  canopy openings in the forest which  stimulate the growth of  seedlings and saplings of meranti species (Shorea  spp).  A study  was conducted to examine the relationship between the  seedlings  height  with  basal  area  of  trees  in several  sample  plots in logged-over forests. The relationship expressed in regression  equation then was  used  to  relate the  seedlings height to  the  cutting  diameter limit.As determination of cutting diameter limit  leads to important decision in the selective cutting,  a problem  of findine the optimal diameter limit  which maximizes the seedlings  height constrained with economic  factor  is formulated   by using nonlinear  programming.

Abstract

An  investigation of  the  development  of  forest  road  condition in relation to soil  erosion  potential  was carried  out at  four logging  companies in  South Kalimantan in 1989  to  find  the potential of forest roads in erosion processes  after constructed and  continually    used, or abandoned  for various years. The condition of road elements especially those  related to factors stated  in the  Universal Soil Loss Equation were recorded  and, based on this information, the category of specific roads in erosion potentials was decided  subjectively  to either  one of very small,  small, medium, rather large, and  large. From  the results,  the following conclusions may  be withdrawn:In general, erosion potentials of  forest roads is decreased  with  time  due  to the growth  of various vegetation  and the process  of  natural soil stabilization.For  continually used main  roads, erosion potentials after about 2  years  are still  rather  large to large; after 3-6 years  are medium; and  beyond 6 yers are very small to small.  If main roads are totally abandoned, erosion potentials after left around one year are rather  large; after  2-3 years are small to medium; and  beyond  3 years are very small.For branch roads, erosion potentials for those abandoned up to one year are rather large to  large; abandoned 2 - 3 years  are medium to rather large; beyond 3 years are very small  to small. For skidding roads that  constructed by clearing  vegetation only or  vegetation, litter and  top  soils  all  together,  when  abandoned one  year or more, they  were densely couered by vegetation and for litter and,  therefore,   their erosion potentials   are very small  to small. Erosion  potential tendency for skidding  roads constructed by soil  cutting  and filling  is almost  the same as that  in branch roads.Logging company practices outside Java showed that they are  lacking  in  the  knowledge   of  soil  erosion,  soil stability, drainage  structures,   and  using  vegetation   for  covering  soil surfaces, all  of  which  are important  in minimizing environmental disturbances   due  to road construction activities.

Abstract

Girdling  treatment  of  teak  stand  before  felling  not  only  intended to reduce  the teak  wood  damage  but also aimed at reducing  log  transport costs. On  the  other hand,  prolonged girdling  treatment could generate significant disadvantage effect, among others:  decreasing total  wood  volume,  degrade  forest land fertility, and often  inducing  wild under growth, etc.This study  deals  with a  research  on  the  extent  of  the  effect of girdling and size of diameter  on the  logging damages.            The study  was  carried  out at Pasar Sore  Sub  Forest District, at  Cepu, Central  Java. This study reveals that  the extent of  the damages are inversely proportional to the girdling time  and diameter  of  the trees.            The average damage  percentages  per trees  on one  year girlding duration with  diameter  classes 50 -59 cm,  60 - 69 cm, 70 -79 cm  are 3.02 %, 4.17% and  7.41%,  while  on  the  two  years  girdling  duration   the  damage  for  the  same diameter classes are 5.62   %,  6.76 % and  7.08%,  respectively.

Abstract

Total area of Pine  forests at Perum Perhutani Unit I, Central Java, relatively    enlarges  each year,  but  its utilization for wood  and  resin  tapping  are only  60%. Pine  resin processing of collophonium commodity has yielded  65% in volume. This study  showed  a predictive model  of collophonium  production  at Central Java as Y  = -11,32+0,65X1**-0,43X2 +0,14X3*The  model  above  showed  that Pine resin volume  (X1) is highly  significant  and collophonium  price  (X3)  is significant to collophoniutn  production  (Y),  whereas  labour  variable  (X2) is not  significant because  the  ultilization of  labour is not efficient yet. The simple  regressions Y1 = 28,77 + 0,65 X1 and  Y2 = 1075  + 9,35  X3 are used  to explain  the relation  between Y and X1 or X2 individually.

Abstract

Chemical  analyses of  several  Indonesia wood  from West  Java and  Kalimantan   has been conducted. The chemical component tested  consisted  of  holocellulose, cellulose,  lignin, pentosan, ash and silica content, solubility in cold water, hot water, one percent  sodium  hydroxide and alcohol benzene  extractrive.The result  shows  that  the holocellulose content ranges from 57,95 - 61,97 percent,    cellulose  from  40,93 - 57,41 percent, lignin  from 22,01 - 29,00  percent, pentosan from  8,35-21,50  percent, ash content  from  0,18 - 3,64 percent, silica  content from  0,05 - 2,47  percent. The  solubility  in cold  water  ranges from  0,39  -   3,59  percent, hot  water  from 0,56  - 9,48  percent, in  one  percent sodium hydroxide  from   6,25  - 31,68 percent and  in alcohol  benzene  (1:2) from 0,95  -  6,03 percent.

Abstract

The  anatomical   features   of  coconut   stem   at  several  depth   and  heights   were  each  observed.   The  nature  stem  has 22 to 30.5  cm in diameter  and the hard pheripheral  region of the stem  is 4-8 cm in thickness.The cross section  of  coconut stem  consists  of  four  region. The outer  region of the stem  with  the  thichness of about 0.5 cm is epidermis and the inner region is the pheripheral   region which can be divided into eksopheripheral and endoperipheral regions.   Eksopheripheral region is  0.5-1 cm consists mainly   of  fiber   tissues;  the  endopehripheral    region consists  mainly of  vibrovascular  bundles, about 4-8 cm in thickness. The innest  region is central portion, which  consists mainly  of parenchyma   tissues.There  is a relation  between   frequency and  diameter of  vibrovascular  bundles  in stem,  where the higher the frequency of vibrovascular bundles (229 bundles/sq.cm), the smalller  the diameter  of  vascular bundles  (103 bundles micron).The fiber dimension varies either along or across  the stem as follows: length 1191.6     to  1980.8   microns,  diameter 28.3 to 42.6 microns, wall thickness 5.2 to 13.8  microns. The runkell  ration  varies  from  0.5 to 1.9.
